In some cases I will ask you to change the exposure and flash output manually. This post will have a few experiments you can try that will help you feel less intimidated by your speedlite as well. Through patience, study, and practice I began to understand my speedlite, and to stop being intimidated by it. I've seen good photos shot with a flash and I've seen bad ones. Reading my camera manual helped me understand my camera, but even the English half of the speedlite manual looked like a foreign language to me. And when I saw that the instruction manual for my speedlite was as thick as the one for my camera, I couldn't believe it! The first thing I did was look to see how many languages it was printed in (answer: only 2, same as the camera).
I'll admit, however, that the first time I read the part about Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC) and Manual Flash, I skimmed over it. I want to make sure I know my way around the camera, so I know how to get what I need from my camera when I need it. I'm one of the rare ones I actually read the instruction manuals.
